Personalia:
Name:
Photonis Nano
Age:
17 (22 Spaikan years)
Gender:
Female
Race:
Spaikan
Morality/personal leanings:
Neutral "Punchy" Good
Powers:
Laser
Spells:
High level spells:
Piercing light: Photonis shoots a bright white ray from her hands to shatter any magical shield or barrier it comes across. It completely negates any effects the shield would normally do on all other spells such as reflection/deflection effects. The caster who's barrier or shield has been shattered this way is inhibited from casting the same spell again for 30 seconds. Upon impact with a body this ray only invokes a mild warm tingle but will not be harmful. Due to the massive amount of energy needed and Photonis being self thought this spell deals some damage to Photonis in the form of burn/exhaustion. Very high end shields like those produced by a highly advanced magical creature or produced by a large convergence won't be breached by this spell, only damaged/weakened.
Medium level spells:
Red laser: launches a red laser towards a target dealing sme damage and applying a mild damage over time after burn effect for 20 seconds (red effect)
Yellow laser: Launches a yellow laser towards a target dealing light damage and applying a faerie fire effect on the target for 20 seconds rendering the target unable to go invisible or hide in darkness.(yellow effect)
Blue laser: Launches a blue laser towards a target dealing some damage and applying a mild delirium for 20 seconds slowing their movement speed and projectile speed. (Blue effect)
Medium multi-chromatic effects:
Red effect + yellow effect: Causes the target to be disoriented lowering accuracy and flight capabilities severely for 20 seconds. (Orange effect)
Red effect + blue effect: Causes the target to be unable to cast any offensive spells that have a projectile. Attempts to do so will result in a backfire dealing a small potion of the damage type that the spell cast would normally do for 20 seconds. (purple effect)
Yellow effect + blue effect: Causes the affected target to be completely immobile yet immune for damage for 10 seconds. The spell triggering this effect will not deal damage. (Green effect)
Low level spells:
Chromatic aberration: An array of lasers surround the caster to displace it making the caster harder to hit for 20 seconds. Only self cast.
Combat maneuvers:
Charging kick: Photonis initiates a fast charge with one of her legs extended. Upon hitting a target it will inflict a fierce amount of damage. If landing on a smooth surface, be it a wall or the ground, this can be used to bounce and rapidly change direction.
Volume striking: This can only be used if she does not move during a round. She’ll pummel any target repeatedly until it either gives in or gives up. This deals anywhere from little to massive damage depending on how long she manages to keep striking. How much damage this ability inflicts is entirely dependent at how long Photonis can continue uninterrupted.
Appearance:
Photonis is a girl who always wears brightly colored clothes, yet always in 1 color. Which means if she wears a red top, her skirt or pants and shoes will match the color of the top perfectly. Her hair is always matched in color with the outfit as well due to a cosmetic magical ability she uses to augment the color of her hair. Her skin is healthily sun browned Caucasian and she's very tall with her being 193 centimeters long (6'4" in nonsensical units). She has an average, though slightly muscular posture. Her eye color always matches with her outfit as well. Her hair is long but also rather spiky and of uneven length, from the looks of it she cut it herself without using a mirror.
Photonis looks quite muscular and athletic combined with her length, though she doesn't look bulky, she is however somewhat broader than the average girl.
In her fairy form, Photonis dons a fighter's outfit. Tightly fit trousers and a sports bra is all it is really, an outfit one could expect to see from a female MMA fighter (for reference). The color of her outfit depends on the color she was wearing before transforming, it will follow suit.
Strengths:
Rapid fire: Due to her laser power her spells can be fired in rapid succession, which is exerting but will help her in a fight.
Strategists: She is good at thinking of plans and finding solutions for problems when she has the time to thoroughly think about it. She is however much weaker at reacting rapidly to a change of situation. (The final clause refers to the Rigid and Pride weakness which situationally undermine this strength)
Keen eye: Her being a laser fairy allows her to see with the same pin point precision as a laser, making her less susceptible to slight of hand and generally more perceptive with a greater eye for detail.
Physical strength: Photonis' length and origin have made her remarkably strong giving her quite a big edge on her physique and hand to hand combat.
Weaknesses:
Rigid: Whenever she thinks of a plan she will get in severe trouble if not everything goes according to plan. She is bad at improvising and reacting on changing environments. This part is the result of her being unable to react quickly to a change in situations. As you'll read in the personality Photonis goes straight for her goal and when obstacles are thrown her way she hasn't foreseen, she'll react adversely and always try to take it head on even when it's a horrible idea to do so, leading to the potential of her ending up in deep trouble.
Unreflective: Due to her focus and constant need to go forward she often fails to reflect back upon a situation causing her to make the same mistake multiple times or until hitting a wall.
Impractical: She is bad at learning practical skills due to her not being able to reflect, it takes her a lot longer to master these things.
Pride: The pride weakness is perhaps one of the most pronounced weaknesses of Photonis as it applies in a lot of situations that commonly occur. When a villain opposes her Photonis will get enraged and might forego strategy when provoked, towards friends or anyone really who gets in Photonis' way it usually mounts up to a beating. (it doesn't even need to be intentional and the person who gets in the way might not even realize it. When reason is gone, it's truly gone. See Rigid weakness which usually has a hand in aggravating this particular one.)
Personality:
Her personality is rigid and straight forward. This causes her very often to fail to reflect back upon a situation. This is only excepted in special cases. If she reflects back she reflects only from one angle and will only reflect once, then set out a new path set as straight as the first one. Then there are the occasions when a problem occurs that cannot be resolved. This sometimes causes her to scatter, being thrown off her focus, end up watching things from a new angle and thereby setting out a new path. She is meticulous in her planning and highly consistent in her reacting upon different situations. If she has chosen her point of focus, she will remain focused until the impossible is reached. Socially this allows her to only have one friend at any given time which she will show any interest in, though she might alter between multiple friends with an interval. Most commonly seen is a pendulum between two friends, like a wave where she spends equal time with both friends spread in waves of interests. This wave of interest never connected yet interwoven with the current path she is on and where her focus lies. Sometimes she tends to wear an outfit of the same color for a longer time, this often indicates a mood of hers being most strongly present, those being; angry, happy, exited, relaxed, sad and afraid. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple respectively.
She is very straight forward and her focus often leads her to explore new things, making her inclined for adventure when this happens to be in the path she is on. She is a hard worker for the things she wants and knows from all her experiences that putting in effort is the only way to get what you want. This makes for a very stiff and strong work ethic and even slight contempt for those who are born into riches and never had to work a day in their lives to achieve anything. She is apprehensive to people and will not easily trust someone, this due to her growing up in the scraplands where people fought one another for basic needs like fresh water and food.
History:
Born on Spaika in the Scraplands, Photonis' life was one of many struggles. Unlike normal kids who grew up on other planets, or even within the confinements of the dome that shielded Teravhín from the outside world she didn't get to play or go to school. Everything she learned was from the sporadic books her parents got from the bazaar. Her parents worked long and hard in the mega factories that produced everything Teravhín needed to sustain and export to the rest of the magical dimension. The lust for wealth that had destroyed the planet in the first place still relentlessly drove the economy, victimizing those who do the work.
One day Photonis' mom and dad went to work yet only her dad came home with the tragic news that photonis' mom had died in a horrible accident at the factory that killed many more. All Photonis has to remember her mother by is a music box, playing a lullaby that in deep recesses of Photonis’ memory, also had words with it.
***
Actual history.
Photonis’ mother is the youngest daughter of the current high seat of the Lumnis family. One of the seven prime families (This means they are highly influential and rich) in Teravhín. To be with Photonis’ father (Josh), Photonis’ mother (Allidra Aryalon Fera Lumnis) had to denounce all three of her last names.
***
It wasn't uncommon for these things to happen in the factory, yet somehow Photonis had always hoped her parents would be spared such fate. That day it dawned on her everyone has to fight and fend for themselves.
She got focused on the books her parents had brought from the bazaar with what little cash they had. Some of them were of physics, some others about the rest of the magical dimension. When reading about the marvel of other places, Photonis dreamed a dream to escape the Scraplands and go to the magical dimension. Mainly to Alfea.
From a young age it was abundantly clear Photonis did possess magical powers. Perhaps even stronger than had been seen in some time on Spaika, but without the funds to get into the dome and not enough resources to set up a portal in the Scraplands Photonis' future looked bleak.
She trained and managed with some guidance from books to get her basic fairy form at the young age of thirteen. She quickly developed an array of spells that should help her in combat. Along her rapid magical progression Photonis' father insisted she studied as well. However crude there were some schools in The Scraplands. Attendance was voluntary which many kids took for an excuse to go out and play unsupervised, resulting in many youth gangs roaming the streets of The Scraplands by day. Photonis did as her father told her to, however much she struggled to learn. She can read and write at a basic level and has some common knowledge about the magical dimension and how screwed up the situation on Spaika actually is. (See Spaika section for more)
Her dad had strictly prohibited her to ever go near the fight pits. One evening when she felt bold and confident she disobeyed her father's will and went to the fight pits. There she found a rough crowd of people cheering on two people dueling in the center of a circle. She could also see bets being placed. It took her a while to scan the entire crowd but she found who she thought was in charge.
At first the man who Photonis thought was in charge laughed at her. A fourteen year old girl wishing to fight in the pits? It sounded preposterous to him. But figuring the gains from some one-sided betting against her he flashed an almost genuine smile and allowed Photonis to fight.
***
The Ferret:
The man in charge is commonly known as “The Ferret” for his practices. What Photonis does not know is that The Ferret is actually Josh’ older brother, Ronnis. The two used to be business partners and started the fight pit, only when Ronnis picked up a more nefarious way to run the business Josh completely distanced himself from The fight pits, the money and his own and only brother.
***
Entering the ring she saw her opponent, a broad woman in her mid-twenties, more muscle than anything, wielding an axe nearly as long as she was tall. Photonis gulped and flashed into her fairy form to go airborne.
The crowd silenced and the woman with the axe objected to the referee who didn't want to hear a word of it. Seconds later after a barrage of spells had landed on Photonis' opponent, Photonis came out the winner of the fight. The crowd remained silent for a couple of seconds, processing what exactly just happened before erupting in the loudest cheer they could possibly produce.
Now came the time she had to come clean to her dad, telling her about the triumph she had in the fight pit and the sum of money she had won. With her minute of fighting she earned more than her dad made with two days of hard labor. At first her father was disdained about the idea, hesitant about the dangers yet Photonis' focus was set, she would get to Alfea and the fight pits were how she was going to do it.

background:
For a talented fighter a payday of ϗ500 per evening isn’t uncommon, even in a destitute area like The Scraplands. The fight pits, of which The Ferret owns one is regarded as one of the only methods to escape the scaplands when receiving an invite to fight in one of the four “profeta arenas.” The Profeta Arena is a ring of four arenas where the most elite fighters from both Scraplands and Teravhín clash. However, the ones from Teravhín competing have usually trained their whole lives for the sole purpose of fighting here. The prime families use these tournaments to assert power. Currently the high seat of house Lecter has the top spot in the council of seven thanks to the fact that their representative has won the overall tournament for several years a row now. To fight in the Profeta Arena is the only way for a Scraplander to get inside the dome without a last name. But at all times when inside the Scraplander will be accompanied by armed guards.
***
To get inside of the dome separating the Scraplands from Teravhín would take quite a large sum of money (ϗ20.000,-), especially for the Scraplanders. But Photonis managed the money she got from her successes in the fight pits and later on the Profeta Arena, making sure she could provide for her and her father while still adding to the pool of cash she needed to get in.
This made sure she managed to get to Alfea at the age of seventeen, a year later than the average student. Her combat capabilities are at the high end of the spectrum, both physically as well as magically. However, she is very unaccustomed to low stress environments, so how will Photonis hold up in the relatively tranquil Alfea environment?
Photonis' possessions:
Due to growing up extremely poor, Photonis has very little possessions upon arriving at Alfea.
-1 very faded and damaged Cyan outfit (or at least, it used to be cyan before the color weathered to a nearly dull grayish color).
-1 very faded and damaged Orange outfit (same applies as with the cyan)
-Some beat up old fairy tale books. 1 from Lynphea, 2 from Spaika and 1 from Domino before the freeze (likely the last one has some historical value and might be sold for a substantial amount, but Photonis will never sell it.).
-1 beat up music box playing a lullaby when opened and winded. If someone touches this without Photonis' permission that person might very well die.
This list is subject to change after arriving at Alfea and will be kept up to date. other than this Photonis will only have standard issue equipment in her room and will have to work for anything else. She has no monetary means since she made her way to Alfea as soon as she could afford to purchase the last name.
Photonis' home:
(I will not convert any of these units to imperial units, only SI units here.)
Physical properties of Spaika:
Diameter: 8963km
Mean circumference: 28862km
Orbital period: 277 Days (Photonis’ age is calculated via the Magical universe calendar and not in Spaikan Years)
Axial tilt: 6°
Mean density: 15000 kg/m3 (Almost thrice Earth’s density)
Surface gravity: 8,9 m/s² (About 90% earth)
Full rotation: 27 hours and 55 minutes. (Photonis can deal with the 24h system, Spaika uses the same units, clocks just have 28 hour reading with a system in place to compensate for the five minutes which shift each night from 02:00 to 02:05, like daylight saving time but then 5 minutes on a daily basis.)
Geology & Environmental:
Spaika’s soil is exceptionally rich in iridium, which is the reason why it’s so dense to begin with. This makes for a large abundance of the toxic substance iridium oxide (IrO2). Creatures native to Spaika have developed an enzyme to cope with this, but to outsiders this could pose an issue. (Mouthmasks will help cope with the aerosols). The food is mostly safe to eat as the iridium is excreted swiftly by organisms with the enzyme, and water inside Teravín is cleaned. Water in The Scraplands on the other hand is toxic, even if it wasn’t polluted by the iridium.
The air on Spaika is breathable for anyone with a facemask, without a facemask for native Spaikans granted you're within 5 miles of the dome or inside it. One can briefly breathe in a 5-20 mile radius around the dome (After a few hours serious issues start to emerge like hypoxia and all its associated symptoms and methane inhalation.) All air outside of the 20 mile radius is considered toxic and cannot sustain life for more than a couple of minutes due to high levels of ammonia and methane in the air and low levels of oxygen. 6% vs 18% in the dome/scraplands The percentage declines linearly starting at the 5 mile marker at 18% and dropping to 6% at the 20 mile mark. Earth's atmospheric oxygen content is 21%. Spaika's average air pressure is 850hPa compared to Earth's 1013hPa. Spaika's average pressure is Earth's average pressure 1.5 kilometers above sea level.
Everything beneath Teravhín's dome is kept alive by terraforming. Tens of thousands of people work daily to maintain the 50 mile wide dome on the inside, to keep the people inside the City of Theravín safe. This incidentally causes the air to be life sustaining just outside of the dome. It's said it's done deliberately to have a workforce for the heavy mining industry still going strong.
Economy:
In Teravhín, there is a massive gap between the middle class and the lower class. Where the middle class lives in good condition, with wealth comparable to the rich Western Europe countries, it’s the lower class that suffers. People are being kept barely alive, and with vast and barren landscapes separating Teravhín from other mega cities akin itself, the lower class’ only alternative is to die.
Spaika’s coin: Numesi (ϗ)
Exchange rate Numesi -> Magical dimension currency: 0.3
Exchange rate Magical dimension currency -> Numesi: 3.5
Background:
Spaika is a place where in early days, people from different magical places settled. Especially those with a knack for mining liked the place for the iridium rich soil it had. Where on other realms this metal was hard and expensive to get by, here it was over abundant. But due to the strange composition of the planet’s soil, its ecosystem was a lot more fragile than on most planets.
When the mining began, pollution associated with mining quickly became a problem. Fauna and Flora that were already strange compared to what one would expect at other places began to suffer first, with vulnerable species dying off.
The magic users among the settlers quickly picked up on this problem and took the problem on. At first this went all well, and for generations the knowledge of how to keep the environment expanded and was passed on.
All was well up until the point when the magical dimension went through an industrial revolution introducing more efficient means to mine. However more efficient, they also polluted way more than anything had ever before. Initially this went well, as generation upon generation has had the time to hone the craft of terraforming magic, to sustain ecosystems. The creatures, they began to change.
Animals warped rapidly into aberrant beasts, ravaging the landscape of everything they could consume. More quickly than they could adjust, flora and fauna on Spaika completely burned itself out in a violent death throw. Those who could flee to the big cities did, those who couldn’t became victims to the frenzy that killed the planet. Those fled to the big city however, weren’t admitted in.
Teravhín had expended a group of magic users to hermatically dome the city shut to keep polluted air from entering. This excluded those fleeing. For days it was hell for the millions of people who tried to get into the city. (estimated there were 470 million trying to enter, but records vary from 250 million to as high as 750 million seeking refuge.) Until nature’s frenzy finally relented and made room for nothing but a barren surface left. Those who were dead were buried to prevent another disaster by pestilence.
The oceans are ruined and completely void of life, most of the planet’s surface too. Those caught outside the dome were stripped of their last names, and were given the scraps of the city to survive, thus bringing the name “Scraplands” to life. Nowadays those living in The Scraplands (still a good 100 million were left outside. Inside the dome around 300 million people lived)
Now with the terraforming skills they acquired over time they keep the mega cities alive, the only patches of land that remain viable to live in. The only reason Spaika hasn’t been abandoned completely as of today is because of the lucrative iridium trade, but the poor have to suffer to keep it lucrative for those who earn the big money. (One could state the entire lower class, those without a last name, are slaves since they’re not allowed to leave the planet nor have the means to do so.)
Spaikan politics:
Teravhín is ruled by a chancellor appointed by the heads of the seven families. Usually the Chancellor is the high seat of one of the houses. (The head of the family.) Who is voted for is decided in combat. Not lethal combat, but highly commercialized arena fights that pit magic user against magic user. The house who’s representative wins, will see their high seat chancellor. Currently the house Lecter, A strong family of electric magic users. Rumors have it they specifically breed their children to produce the strongest fighters, but no one ever vocalizes this, much less actually accuses them.
In The Scraplands there are similar arenas. They are all ran by The Spaikan prime families though nobody outside of the arena owners and the contact persons pulling the string no one knows. It’s used as a means to control the population. Offer The Scraplanders the opportunity to escape their destitute situation and become professional fighters. And if that doesn’t work at least there is some form of entertainment so the morale stays marginally high enough for them not wanting to kill themselves, thus keeping their valuable cheap labor forces.
All in all from an ethical point of view, the ruler of Spaika, or basically rulers, since the other high seats won’t treat The Scraplanders any better are oppressive and just out to make more money (of which they already have way more than they could spend in a hundred lifetimes.)
Any crime committed in the inner city by a person 18 years of older is punished by being stripped of one's last name. This instills such fear in the middle class, that they don't dare revolt or walk out of line in fear of ending up in The Scraplands. Most people thrown out of the dome will die rapidly due to being unable to survive in those conditions. Only few manage to survive, and even fewer manage to get the money to buy a new last name. When a new last name is bought, ones crimes, no matter their nature are forgiven and that person is welcomed back into the city. (This however does not mean one is also forgiven of personal slight accompanied with the crime, just for the authorities it is.) This law also applies to those not native to Spaika. (These people won't really lose their last name from the Magix records, it just means you have to pay ϗ20.000,- in order to leave. if you fail to produce that amount of money, you're forced to stay in The Scraplands. Native Spaikans will also be stripped of all their posessions on Spaika before thrown into The Scraplands. Outlanders will have everything on their person confiscated before being thrown into The Scraplands.
Punishable offenses within the dome that merit the stripping of one's last name:
-Stealing anything exceeding the value of ϗ250,- (This includes scams).
-The obvious crimes (murder, rape, assault, fraud).
-Magic use without permit or outside the arena.
Education:
Inside of Teravhín there are ample schools and a sufficient level of education to be completely on-par with the higher tiers in technical and non-magical education. However, the education of magic is completely warped with pre-conceived way certain magical powers are employed. This stems from the efforts of counteracting the negative environmental impact of their intensive mining industry. Training for the magical powers is only given in the way best for terraforming. This resulted in what The Spaikans call "The order of magic" which are guidelines how someone with certain powers is to be trained in magic to suit the terraforming needs the best. Coincidentally this had led to a disbalance in the combat capabilities of different powered magic users. Each of the prime families represents one of the seven "elements" they distinct for terraforming. Light, Darkness, Electricity, Fire, Water, Air, Earth(nature) are the seven distinctions in power made by the people of Spaika.
In The Scraplands there are schools, but they're not funded, often handled by females who weren't employed in the factories/mines or who couldn't due to handicap or disease. School has voluntary attendance and as a result few attendees. Most kids, especially between the ages of 12 and 17 (Magical universe years, not Spaikan years) are in some way involved in youth gangs.
As a result of a lacking education system and little to no attention given by their parents, many youths turn to crime. Criminal numbers in the scraplands can't be measured since there is no official police. There are however vigilantes who try to keep people safe. In cases where someone behaves especially bad (This assault, rape, murder, in some cases theft especially during scarcities which occur often) public lynchings and mob justice will be dispensed.
Around 25% of the people in The Scraplands cannot read or write. Another 40% only writes and reads at primary school levels. The remainder forms a spectrum from middle-schooler to advanced readers.
A magic permit can be gained when BOTH the following conditions are fulfilled.
1) A magic user has completed secondary magical education in Theravín or attended a different form of magical education outside of Theravín and graduated (Alfea counts)
2) A magic user is employed in a listed Spaikan company
Wildcard: One is employed as a fighter in one of the four Profeta arenas.
Magic licences are restrictive, permitting magic use only when active in designated areas.
